Texas LTC Frequently Asked Questions

For my Texas LTC, do I have to bring my own handgun? How about ammunition?

No, you do not have to bring your own firearm to the class.  There will be pistols at the range you may rent for $5, plus the cost of ammunition.

Can I qualify with a .22lr?

Yes, you can.  There is no longer a caliber requirement for the qualification.

Can I use a red-dot site or laser?

As of 2023 you can now use red-dot sites for the qualification.  However, you cannot use lasers or any site that magnifies.

Does it matter if I bring a revolver or semi-automatic handgun to qualify?

No, it does not matter.  As of September 1, 2013, the have eliminated the restrictions that applied to qualifying with a revolver.  Now you can qualify with either a revolver or semi-automatic handgun.  You can carry either type of handgun no matter which type you used to qualify.

What else do I need to bring with me?

You will need a handgun, which you can rent from us.  You will need 50 rounds of ammo, ear protection and eye protection all of which you can purchase from us if you need to.  You will also need a state issued photo ID.  You are welcome to bring any of your own guns, ammo, ear and eye protection or we have it here.

How difficult are the Texas LTC shooting qualification?

It is actually not difficult at all.  The legislature did not enact this law or design it in such a manner as to prohibit an ordinary, safety conscious, responsible citizen from being able to successfully meet the requirements. Shooting the qualification is the high point of the day.  Everyone will have a “blast” and safety will be paramount.

How long does the Texas LTC class last?

The law requires the full in-person course to consist of 4 hours minimum of instruction.  This does not include the shooting qualification or any breaks we take so you will be here between 5- and 6-hours total. If you already took the online class, which is 4 hours long you will need to come in to complete the process.  For online students you will need to do 1-2 hours of range instruction, which is classroom time and the shooting qualification so you will be here about 2 hours total.  If you have further questions, please send them to info@eaglegunrangetx.net and we will answer them as soon as possible.

Do I have to sign up for the class ahead of time?

Yes, sometimes our classes fill up so you will need to reserve a seat ahead of time.  You can sign up online, over the phone or in person.

Can I get my Texas License to Carry at 18 years old?

Yes, you can, as of 2023 you can now receive your Texas LTC starting at 18 years old.  If you are under 21, I cannot rent handguns to you or sell you handgun ammunition so you will have to bring your own handgun and ammunition with you.

Can I bring food or drinks?

Yes, as long as you bring enough to share with the instructor.  The real answer is yes you can bring food and drinks, as a matter of fact, we will provide donuts and coffee.

  • Greatest people ever at this place! I rarely write reviews but just had to take the time to say how courteous, knowledgeable, patient, and professional everyone here is. Been here a couple times now and multiple staff members have gone above and beyond to make our experience more comfortable, fun, and memorable. The facility is excellent also. We will definitely keep coming back. Thank you!

  • Highly recommend this place! Staff was friendly and very helpful. I was testing out my new firearm and learned a few things to improve my aim and prevent failure to feed. I'll be coming back to take the LTC class.

  • Great place to try out guns before you purchase to know exactly what you want. They just so happened to have the ones we wanted to try. When we buy, we certainly will go for practice and lessons!

  • I took my kids here for the free ride safety class. The instructor was engaging and informative. We rented a Glock after and shot a little and he helped us get set up. Everyone on staff was friendly and accommodating. We will definitely be back!
