How do I apply for my LTC?
There are several steps that must be completed to apply for your Texas License To Carry (LTC). Most of these steps can be completed in any order.
-
Step A. Take an LTC class
At some point you must take an LTC class from a certified DPS LTC instructor. During this class you will spend a minimum of four hours in a classroom. You will take a written test and must pass a shooting qualification. At the end of class you will be given a LTC-100 form. This form shows you have taken the class, passed the written test and the shooting qualification. Do not lose this form; you will need it later on.
-
Step B. Apply with the state of Texas for your LTC
The easiest way to apply for your LTC is on the DPS website. Go to this web address: https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/ltc/. Click on ‘Apply’ under the “New Users” section if this is your first time to apply.
Next you will enter your Texas Driver License number, Date of Birth and Texas Driver License Audit Number.
Your Audit number can be found here on your ID.
On the following pages you will be prompted to enter five years of residence history, five years of work history, any military service you have performed, and any court issues.
Now you are ready to pay the state the application fee. The standard application fee is $40. They do offer discounts for current or retired military, age, and a few other things.
Once your fee has been paid you will be given a checklist with a barcode at the top. You will want to print this out. This will list all the documents needed to complete your application. We will refer back to this later. You will then see a link to setup your fingerprint appointment. Click on this link and enter the information you are asked for.
-
Step C. Submit your documents
You must now collect all the items on your checklist and submit them to the Department of Public Safety. Scan all your documents and create PDF files. Go to this web address:
https://www.dps.texas.gov/rsd/contact/chlatt.aspx
Enter all the information and scroll down.
Click on “Choose File” select the PDF file that you created
Do this for each file you need to submit.
Click on “Attach”
Enter the characters that look written out into the box to prove you are not a robot.
Click on “Submit Form”
